Packing Tips
Household Appliances
To avoid water damage, dampness and mould when storing your fridge/freezer, it is important to ensure that you empty and defrost your fridge and give it enough time to dry before storing it. Once this is done store your fridge/freezer upright with the doors slightly open to prevent odour build up and mould. An old rag in the door is a great way to prevent the fridge/freezer doors from closing.
Small & Large Sized Furniture
It is important to remove all contents from any drawers and cupboards prior to storage, even if it is only temporary. When in transit, any items that are left behind can potentially damage furniture and makes it heavier to move. A great trick is to use old blankets or towels to wrap your furniture to prevent any scratches. This will also protect walls and doorways as you move the furniture in and out of storage.
Dishes & Glassware
To avoid boxes of broken dishes and glassware, it is essential to make sure that you take the time to pack them away properly. We recommend that you individually wrap each item in bubble, (newspaper if you don’t have any) and pack them carefully in the box. Fill in any gaps with paper or fabric such as pillowcases or small towels to make sure that everything fits in tightly to stop individual items from moving and breaking during transit.
Hi-Fi, TVs & Audio
Whenever possible, be sure to keep the original boxes for your TV, computer and any audio devices as they will fit snugly. If you do not have the original boxes, then find one of a similar size (many shops have them for free) and tape up any rips or holes to stop anything from getting in. Towels can be used to protect screens from scratches and moving inside boxes that are not original. All batteries should be removed and stored separately to avoid leaks which will damage electrical equipment.
Garage & Shed Items
When storing garage and shed items that have been used outdoors, it is important to thoroughly clean them to make sure that there is no dirt or vegetation attached. This will prevent damage to your garage and shed items and will prevent dirt from spreading to any other belongings. It is also extremely important that all fuel tanks have been emptied prior to storage as this poses a fire hazard.
Books, Files or other archives
When storing books, files, archives or anything else that is paper based, it is important to keep them in small or medium sized airtight, waterproof containers. This will ensure that your books do not mould and that they are able to be easily lifted and moved for transport. It is also important to lay the book flat rather than standing them up as this can damage their spine over time. For special documents, you can also wrap them in paper towel or cloth to further prevent damage.
Mattress & Furniture Protection
When moving house it’s important to wrap up any furniture items to protect both them as well as the walls of your home. You don’t want scratches all over your tables and scuff marks all over the walls. The best way to do this is is to cover all wooden or glass furntiure pieces in thick moving blankets. If the furniture is going on the back of a ute or open vehicle, make sure to tie all blankets down so that they don’t blow away during transit. When transporting mattresses, wrap the entire mattress and at least two layers of plastic sheeting. This will protect the white mattress from dirt and rain and will also ensure an extra layer of protection if one layer is to rip.
Boxes, Bubble Wrap & Tape
When packing your belongings in boxes it is important to make sure they are anchored in; you want to make sure they don’t bounce around and break during transport. To effectively pack your box, first individually wrap fragile items in bubble wrap. When placing them in the box, place heavier items at the bottom and lighter ones at the top. Next, fill in all the gaps with scrunched up pieces of newspaper or tissue paper. This will stop your items from bouncing around in transport and will create more cushioning between them. Lastly, make sure all boxes are properly tapped up to ensure the boxes stay closed and secure during transit.
